Terry,
You are using FSK not AFSK, which uses the PACKET connector. Thus the MIC
control has no effect. Press the RTTY mode button on the MP and check the
MP manual for FSK (not AFSK) operation.

I know this is in the middle of a contest, but I need help with my 1000MP.
I am using the fsk jack in the back with my Hal P38 rtty modem. My alc is
beyond the normal range. The manual says to use the mic gain to control the
alc setting and then adjust the PO. The mic gain seems to have no function.
I am in the rtty (lsb) mode. I have made some contacts in the contest
today, but I don't want to damage the modem or the rig.
