Thank you, to all who have replied.  The problem evidently was in early DVS
units, Yaesu subsequently making a modification which has "fixed" it in newer
productions.  As for anyone having the "hot" DVS, I simply jumpered a pot
into the audio line, got on the air with a friend, and found the value that
took out the over modulation while still allowing adequate audio.  (Turned
out to be 1.5K).  I then put in a fixed resistor and all seems to be working
fine.  BTW, the audio line is the white wire, 2 up from the shield, on the
connector insider the DVS2.

John, ON4UN, also noted that this was "necessary" in early units, so at least
those of us trying to deal with it are in good company....
