As on vacation in the south part of Italy, I asked Frank to let me using
his superb station for SARTG: I didn't want miss that contest and as my
antennas in my main qth are out of order that one could have been my last
contest for a long period.... :-( .
Frank lives in a real country estate: more than 7 acres of good land, not far
from ALBEROBELLO (the town of world known Trulli) and from CASTELLANA GROTTE,
famous for its Grotto. My parents home is at 10 minutes car from him, so moving
could not be a problem! It took a week to convince him letting me to operate
his shack: none never touched his radios since then and he worried about
possible failures.
He has a very fine station: his qsl card seems to be a market of amateur
radios: FT 1000, Ic 775, FT 277 and a mess of other equipments for satellite
operation and V-U-SHF.
The towers (I counted three of them) are homemade by him: quite tall....more
than 30 meters and all self-supporting. Besides, the idea of using a 3 el. Yagi
for 40 meters was very pleasant for me (never used one before).
And what about using a DSP radio ?
Frank has always used his station for ragchewing worldwide only with people
speaking italian language, so he wasn't much attracted from the idea of
having his house occupated by someone for an entirely day.
This prevented me from working the first eight hours round....sigh.
Besides, the shack were organized more for a sight pleasure than for a pratical
manner: on one side ALL the Icom radios, to the other side ALL the Yaesu's....
the rotator control boxes were hung on the top of the three layers table..hi.
I must admit I had had many difficulties in suggesting him moving his radios,
but finally I won also that battle: IC-775 DSP was in the front of me....but
nothing to do for control boxes.....hi.
Frank has never got a computer, but I have had enough luck: I took my own Pc
with me....I could not resist at the idea of missing messages from reflector
for a whole month although calling Viterbo from Bari is quite expensive....
I began 10 minutes after the second round started and I enjoyed Sartg for 16
remaining hours...... vy :-) .
Propagation seemed to be better than my last RTTY contest (ANARTS), may be due
to the better antennas. The contest ran flawless till I moved on 3 el. for 40m.
Here a bitter surprise stroke me: high, intermittent ROS due to a poor
connection at the Yagi. Of course nothing to do at that time: it was too late
for climbing the tower, so I used the yagi only for receiving when signals were
too low. My score reflects deeply the lack of the first 8 hours: few qso's on
40 and 80. On 20 all the USA call areas were worked less the 7th...W7LZP where
were you? On 15 only one Usa station worked at the point that when I was
called I asked for a repeat as I had lost any hope to find Usa on 15 (W4IF,
thanks).
Only a VE station worked in all the contest (VE7QO on 20). It could be only an
impression, but since the last months VE's seem missed in action. 10 meter.....
a great pleasure.....a lot of EU's very strong with their signals.
Due of the lack of experience with 775 DSP, I found it not much better than
my 765, but I did not operate that "State of art" radio at the best
possibilities it could surely offer.
This modest effort was possible thanks to Ray who in a bat of an eye sent
me a new password for RTTY...with the call IK7APK. Thanks Ray!
Thanks to everybody for giving me the great pleasure of good rates when in
running mode. I hope to have given to you a new italian province on Rtty.

below): it will be my care printing cards for this contest, but please, an
humble prayer: send your qsl's via bureau: it could be a fine way to
push Frank forward contesting world. In the future it will be my care to make
his station will not exist only for ragchewing.
Ospitality was warm and the coffee on Sunday afternoon was I needed.....
A special thank to his wife for letting me to occupate the second floor of
their fine farm-house for an entirely day and of course to everybody for
reading those lines till now.
