Equipment: Omni VI+, Alpha 99 Amp. Inverted L: linear-loaded vertical part
made of 40 ft. of 300-ohm twin lead, top wire 65 ft long, one elevated counter-
poise wire 7 feet up. "Short" Beverage (only 290 ft.), oriented E-W, separate
RG58 feed lines to transformers at each end to allow looking E. or W.
Remarks: Second year on 160, and in ARRL Test. Ran more this year; result,
over twice as many QSOs with only 1.5 more hours than last year, and 2.9 times
as many points. Short Beverage made running much more productive: able to
easily copy many weak stations not even audible on inv.-L TX ant. Conditions
noticeably better than in 2000 ARRL contest: worked several CA stations and two
EUs, last year heard neither nor even better stations working any.
Rain Fri. night after 8 mostly dry weeks made the usually-quiet EHV lines 0.3
miles NE burst into hoarse song, giving S5 to S6 noise with Beverage looking
East but fortunately only S1 to S3 with Beverage looking West toward most of
the country. By Sat. night, it was still raining but some of the crud must
have washed off the insulators - much less power line noise.
