Comments:

I had a cold all during the week before the contest and was just
beginning to snap out of it as the contest began. I put more time
in than I expected to because conditions seemed so good.

Now that I have crossed the magic 65 years-old age barrier for almost
a year, I told myself before this contest that I was going to
sacrifice absolute score to do a few things I really like to do.
So I spent a couple hours on 40 late Saturday afternoon with the
beam on the long path to Asia, CQing on the low end to see how many
JAs and other Asians would answer. The answer was "not a lot, but
enough to make things interesting." Among those calling me at that
time was 4D71/N0NM, HL1EJT and JT1CO. I was surprised at the number
of Europeans calling me with the beam in that position as well.

I also lingered on 40 and 80 in the mornings well after the run bands
to Europe had opened. It was great to hear the big JA signals on the
80 meter grey line -- beam southwest -- Saturday morning. The champ
was JH1OGC who hit 20 db over 9 on the S-meter at 1105 UTC. Sunday
morning some of the JA signals on 40 meter short path were simply
unbelievable. JE1ZWT came very close to pinning the S-meter here.

My FT-1000-MP went belly-up on October 8 and has been taking a
vacation at the Vertex Standard Radio Spa in California ever since.
The good news is that it's wending its way back to me as we speak.
My venerable TS-830-S came off the bench to star in this fall contest
season and has performed like a champ, worn and tattered that it is.
The main VFO warbles as times so I had to use the remote VFO for the
entire contest, and this caused my leading characters to be clipped
about 30 percent of the time, but people seemed to get my call OK.
I do love the sound of that old Kenwood receiver! I also had to get
used to tuning up the exciter again when changing bands!

Except for 160, which seemed to be limited to the Western Hemisphere
the few times I listened to it, the bands were fabulous! On 80 I
was working Europeans all the way up to about 3585 KHz, and once I
passed 3550 or so it seemed it was a lot easier to get them to answer
up there too than it was down below. On 40 I think I found CW people
all the way up to 7090!

Rates were good. Here is my rate sheet FYI:
