Comments:
No doubt about it, this is a Contesters Contest!
That said, I would personally like to see
NO mandatory OFF Times and allow High Power Entries.
Who ever thought that counting Multipliers per Band and NOT allowing High Power
for Backscatter and LF contacts was a Good Idea? I heard several close-in
backscatter stations on 20M who could NOT hear my 100W.
My OFF-Time strategy was to do 30min ON and 30min OFF for the first 3 hours and
then fit in yet another break before dark. That resulted in roughly 1 QSO per
minute in the first 3 hours. Taking a 30min Break and returning to 20M in
hopes of catching more mults in the middle of Very HOT conditions on 40M was a
BIG MISTAKE. My 2200 Hour was a DISASTER with only 18 Q's in 30min on 20M,
preceded by 72 Q's and followed by 91 Q's on 40M.
My Operating strategy was to do S&P immediately upon Band Change since everyone
is Fresh Meat. This worked quite well and actually produced higher initial
rates than CQing with several 3Q's/min (and maybe one 4Q/min).
On a Station Design Note, IMO, stations designed for DX contests leave
something to be desired for Domestic Contests.
My High EU 80M Dipole was a Killer to W1/VE1 but SUCKED to the midwest so I
retuned my JA/SA 100ft CenterFed Dipole at 80ft from 40M to 80M which seemed to
work reasonably well. (My High JA/SA Inverted Vee broke last summer after 7
years in the wind and still needs to be replaced). My 80M Elevated GP (with
suspected parastic reflector from Tower to the South played quite well to
VE/W7. Thought about putting up my FD 40M Inverted Vee at 60 ft but didn't
find it until my 4th break. Oh well, the CC 2L40 seemed to work well even if
it is fairly high for close-in contacts.
On 160M I only used my Elevated GP (130ft R25 plus mast) which beams NW due to
Parasitic Reflection action of my other 130 ft tower to the SE. It was hearing
and working Extremely Well and NO Beverages were used. I ended up spending a
Lot of Time on 160M starting at 0200Z leaving me wondering where to go in the
last hour of the contest. Everyone seemed to disappear from 160M in the last
Half Hour so I went to 80M hoping to find WA. Heard 2 plus ME, but they were
S&Ping so I moved up and CQ'd to no avail until N0SXX called in from SDak.
Special Thanks to K1LI from VT for QSYing from 80 to 40 to 160
and VE9DX for QSYing from 160 to 80 to 40!
Also thanks to N4OGW for moving me from 40 to 20 to 15.
Has anyone ever figured out the Best Beam Headings for Backscatter after Dark?
I was beaming West and it worked, but I've also worked people beaming EAST in
past contests which seemed like the best direction at the time (High MUF over
Africa?)
Missed AL on 20/15.
NO Joy from ME ND NV VE4,6,8etc, and VO.
160M produced 3 unique multipliers from DE NE WY. Go Figure.
Used my Icom 746PRO this time with filters set to 500, 300, and 200 Hz.
(old 746 recently dropped to 80W output for unknown reason)
