It's easy to second guess strategy and I'm still guessing. 15m was (semi) open
at the start, but too many times I've gone there and had low rates. This time
I kept the rate going on 20 and picked off mults instead. I kept checking the
band scope and saw really good signals, so finally decided to try a run on 15
and guess what? No rate and only one new mult for 10 minutes of CQs. Back to
20 and 150+ again. As I said, still guessing. One of these days 15m will
actually be open again.
Rates were good all day. I wasn't able to work into 9-land on 20 which cost me
lots of Qs, but 160m made up for it. With one hour to go, I was on 160m with a
half hour of off time yet to take. My 160 map was missing WA OR ID, and
several long 1s, 2s, and 4s. My rate was 100+ so it was hard to quit, but I
decided to take time off and work the last half hour, hoping the band would
open more west and perhaps lengthen some. It paid off. WA came in first at
0535, followed a few minutes later by NH, MS, and SC. With 15 minutes to go,
OR appeared followed by NS which I also moved to 80m. With 10 minutes to go,
NJ, ID and NE mults came in all in a row and suddenly 200K points seemed
possible. NE was also state #50 for all-band WAS. In VE-land, I worked BC AB
MB ON QC NS PE and NL.
Overall, I worked 7 ops on four bands : N3QO, NC4KW, W5WMU, W6YI, W6YX, W7RN,
and WS6K. I worked 32 ops on 3 bands and logged 816 unique calls. My only 10m
Q was local and my only DX Q was TI.
It was also fun to introduce Ryan, an Air Traffic Control student at Hesston
College to contesting. I invited the class to visit during the contest and
listen in to some fast-paced communications. Ryan showed up Saturday evening
when the rate meter was solidly 150+ and perhaps got an idea of what a busy
airport might sound like. During my off time, I set him up on another radio
and he had fun trying S&P using the Hesston College ARC call K0HC. Thanks to
those of you who worked him. He certainly left smiling!
The NAQP is one of my favorite "short" contests and it's always a pleasure to
