Comments:
Field Day-style operation from Bangsbo Fort, North Jutland. Operated from what
would have been the Nazi command bunker had the Allies invaded by way of North
Denmark. Room next to where I operated had been the "wireless room",
with a "morse beacon" (for communicating with ships) and, according to
the signage, "a powerful SW radio transmitter of 800 watts." My
AL811H was putting out about 800 watts, so I restored wireless communications
to this historic site, if temporarily.
No good trees or other support correctly situated -- the military installation
next door is impressive with multiple towers about 300 feet tall, but I
couldn't access. We did inform them of my operation in case of interference.
Used a pretty sorry excuse for an antenna -- just a low wire that was
"almost an L", 18 feet vertical, 110 feet horizontal connected to a
pipe on the next bunker. The center of the sagging horizontal wire was about
10 feet over the grass field. Used one 75 foot 12" wide radial consisting
of a tin foil roll. I decided not to model it because I didn't want to know
how bad it was.
First night for NA heard only VY2ZM & K3ZM, both weak and no hope of
hearing me. Their stations clearly are in a different class. Second night I
did manage to snag K3ZM, VY2ZM, W3BGN & W2MF, all on the first or second
call. Note to self: investigate what they use for receiving antennas!
73, Dave K3ZJ
