For the fifth consecutive year, Brian (AA2BJ) traveled to my (Joe, WI2E) home
for Field Day. The first time we did this, it was 1987 and all Brian had to do
was walk down the street. Now, it's a trip from NLI to EPA and the operating
position of our youth in a backyard tent is now down in the basement of my
house. One thing has stayed the same over the years: we just have a great time
catching up and operating together.
This year hasn't been one that has afforded me much operating time, so there
was a significant amount of antenna work to be completed in the week leading up
to FD. Yes, it was a long, harsh winter! Murphy then showed up on Friday with
computer network issues and--only an hour before the start--a failed connector
somewhere in the system threw the K3 into transmit seemingly randomly.
Thankfully, Brian diagnosed the problem and had it fixed with 15 minutes to
spare.
We then split the operating time nearly 50/50 between CW (WI2E) and phone
(AA2BJ). This year, we also used a voice keyer for the first time, and it seems
to have worked well, possibly even better than the microphone itself which
apparently developed some sort of feedback problem late Sunday morning. 2014
will also go down in our personal FD history as the first time we made RTTY
QSOs (six of them, all on 20M).
Conditions seemed much more challenging than last year, especially on 15M where
stations went from loud to barely audible quickly. Given the solar weather, I
suppose this was to be expected, and it produced a noticeable drop in our 15M
QSO total from 2013. Still, we nearly achieved last year's point total as we
made progress on 20M and 80M year-over-year.

15M: dipole (NE/SW) at 35 ft. and inverted vee (NW/SE), apex at 36 ft.

The point total above is inclusive of bonus points (W1AW message, web score
submission) and exclusive of our QSOs with other 1D stations (which are
included in the QSO totals).
Once again, thanks to everyone who actually went into the field or hooked up
emergency power. In addition to all the major reasons for having a full Field
Day experience, it really made a great weekend possible for us, and we very
much appreciate it. We're definitely looking forward to FD 2015.
