Comments:
Conditions seemed like a crap shoot going into the contest but luckily they held
up for what turned out to be a really enjoyable weekend. Hard to imagine that
in a couple of years it will be questionable if 15 will even open.
Thunderstorms were predicted for Friday and Saturday but I was lucky that the
storms turned out to just have a little rain. I feel for the guys in Texas
that were rained out. The station worked great and for a change everything was
sorted and working properly a week before the contest started.
Conditions, as compared to 2013, were down on 10 meters. However they were
still good enough for 1-2 hours of run time to EU both days and about the same
for running to JA. I thought 10 was really going to open nicely on Sunday as I
was able to work some zone 16 and zone 21 stations on the second radio, but the
rate just wasn't there when I went to run. 160 was dreadful, and it didn't
help that the EU beverage didn't work. The farthest east I worked on 160 was
zone 5. Conditions to Asia were phenomenal on 10-40 meters.
After operating this contest in 2013, I knew that I needed to do a better job
of putting multipliers into the log without sacrificing rate. Going into the
contest I decided to pay special attention to all multiplier areas. In other
words, treat the contest like the World Wide contest that it is instead of just
having the mindset of running JA and EU. All multipliers are the same value
whether they are 5,000 miles away or 500 miles away. Being acutely aware of
the potential multipliers available and having a general idea about what band
they would be on helped to give my second radio work more focus. I went into
the contest with a goal of working 100 or more countries on 10, 15, 20, and 40
meters. I also didn't want to just eek out 100 countries on a band like 20
meters. 20 is tough from here. It is really hard to run EU and almost
impossible to run JA. But I knew that the available multipliers on that band
would be huge so I was really pleased to be able to work 120 countries there.
At the half way mark I had 3.6 million points and made a goal of 8 million
points. The goal kept me motivated to keep pushing hard on Sunday and I almost
made it. It became really hard to take the time to work all of the W stations
that kept calling on Sunday. Over 300 went into the log this year which is
nearly double the amount from 2013.
Thanks to my dad for helping to get the station in order. He has put a lot of
work into it the last year and everything is working very efficiently.
