Comments:
Got a late start, lethargy, and the fact that N1MM wanted to update when I first
tried opening it up earlier in the morning. Then our beautiful
"Ashcan" cat woke up and wanted to be fed. A cat is much more
important than ham radio of course.
I got to the site along the North Country National Scenic trail about 1250Z,
and took my time makiing sure everything was set up correctly. The temperature
was a balmy 8 °C, with light wind, so operating was a pleasure.
I fired up on 40 meters, found that quite a few folks were on the band already,
but found a "sweet spot" at 7034.7 KHz, and started a "run".
I didn't move. Occasionally another station would come a hundred Hz or so from
me, but I kept plugging along with CQ CWT, et. cetera. The rate was nothing
which would be of interest to the KW+++ gang, but contacts kept rolling in,
almost one a minute for the entire 39 minutes during which I operated.
Oh, you say there's 45 minutes between 1315Z and 1400Z? Well, yes, but 7
minutes was occupied with the primary purpose of setting up along a National
Park Trail. One of the nearby neighbors, finished his morning walk, and came
over and asked questions about what I was doing. We had a nice, 7 minute chat
about the National Park being coincident with the Michigan State Park linar
trail which traverses this part of Rockford, about the centennial of the
National Park Service, about ham radio, etc.
Anyway, the KX2 and 33' sloper worked flawlessly. I made a few typos in entry,
which reduced my rate a bit, but all in all, it was a great day out along the
trail!
