Comments:
After operating SOAB(A) HP the last couple of years, this year I was joined by
Scott K5PS(V31CQ) to do a M/S entry. This was the first time to use the two
operating positions at the station here simultaneously, but with help from
station owner Andre (V31DL) we got the necessary protection protocols programmed
into the microHam usb router SW controlling the Station Master Deluxes. Had to
fight with Windows 10 sound S/W a good bit at first. I hate what MS has done to
sound settings and behavior in Windows 10!
There are still some hardware bugs to be ironed out, but the mult station proved
its worth in scooping up new mults while running on the other station. We
figured out how to use the Pass function in N1MM+, though not sure we actually
succeeded in getting anyone to follow us from the run to mult station. For the
high bands, while the run station had an X7 at 63 feet, the mult station there
was limited to a windom at modest height.
One of the highlights occurred Sunday afternoon. While on the run station I
heard IK2SGL/OA9 Cqing lonely on 15m. Hadn’t heard anyone from Peru on the
whole contest, so jumped on him for a double mult. Immediately asked him to
move to 20, he complied and scored another mult. Then I asked if he’d go to
10m, he agreed and made another double mult QSO there. At his suggestion we
tried 40, but in the middle of the afternoon, that just wasn’t going to
happen. 5 mults in 3 QSOs in rapid succession. Nice! Thanks Daniel!
Scott was pleasantly surprised Saturday day night to have JT1BU call into his
20m run for a double mult there.
40 and 20 often seemed mushy, due no doubt to the disturbed propagation
conditions this weekend. 20 was the money band, supplying 60% of the QSOs. 40
was down from my SOAB numbers in previous years due to a combination of
conditions and the loss of the 40m extension on the old A3S that took a
lightning strike and was replaced by a Cushcraft X7 without a 40m extension,
leaving us with some inverted V’s instead.
Mults and zones were down overall from past years, again due to the
comparatively poor propagation. Of the two dozen Qs on 10m, most were from SA
with maybe a handful of stateside.
The stateside mult chart filled out pretty well, but where was ND!? Not a
single Q from there. Next year, maybe someone in Northwest MN should do a
Dxpedition to Fargo, ND!
Run station: IC-7800, PW1 Amp, OM Power 6 band BPF box, X7 beam (10/15/20) at 63
feet, inverted Vs for 40 and 80, microHam Keyer II and Station Master Deluxe,
Windows7 laptop running microHam USB router 9.2.2 and N1MM+ networked.
Mult Station: IC-7300, finicky SPE 1.3k amp (which kept dropping off line), OM
Power 6 band BPF box, long windom (10/15/20), inverted Vs for 40 and 80,
microHam Keyer II and Station Master Deluxe, Windows10 laptop running microHam
USB router 9.2.2 and N1MM+ networked.
Once again, many thanks to Andre (V31DL/DL1AS) and his XYL Monika for their fine
hospitality and use of the station at the Maya Hill Lodge.
