Comments:
This was my first serious contest in some time, and my first using FT8. With a
modest antenna (Stressed Moxon) and 50 watts I was pleased to see propagation so
good, making it fun to roll up contacts and multipliers.
All of my contesting in years past was a mixture of phone and CW, which I enjoy.
But FT8 and N3FJP software made it much easier for the dupe checking and
automatic logging of QSOs as a single-op station.
Although not as "present" as phone or CW during the operation, FT8
still requires a good measure of skill and attention, as sometimes I was called
by up to four stations at once and had to manage the queue before they went
away. There is a great deal of manual work and snap decision making, but it
still allowed me to even have a full dinner at my radio desk while the contest
was at its peak.
At the very least, I'm going to be a little sharper for Field Day.
