All amps made in the USA must be type accepted. This means meeting IMD and
driving power standards. Here is the drill.....to keep amps out of the
hands of CBers the amp must not be capable of operation between 24 and 31
Mhz. The ham can modify the amp (the FCC still believes hams are
technically capable.) The amp cannot be made to be driven by less than 50
watts. CB rigs are 5 watts. So no AB1 amps.

As far as as 2 hole or 3 hole amps...the manufacturer can leave a space for
the other tube (Alpha 77) and provide a kit for installing it. Don't know
how the Commander has been accepted. AMP supply made the LK-800 with three
3CX800's but sold a puny supply so much over 1500W was almost impossible. Of
course a heavy duty outboard supply was also available for the ham (show
your license).

The IMD and purity standard is why Mirage and others never did bring a solid
state model to market. Now with Lucas Transformer and others building 25,
40, 50 + v high amp supplies (rather than 13.8V) K4NV's suggestion about a
1.5KW solid state amp makes sense!

The ham can build any amp he or she wants without type acceptance...but they
must meet the standards if ever checked!

My 8877 amp cuts off at over 1500W, my auto only runs at 55MPH, and what
other fairy tales do you want to hear!
