Tom,
All chips are devils. They are all designed by people of dubious
intellect and moral fibre, using processes more akin to black magic than
science, including in many cases, a strange belief in simulation!
Additionally, the design process seems to increasingly rely on computers
rather than a basic understanding of electronics, while the fabrication
process still has a tendency to "eye of newt and toe of frog".
My very good friend, Dr. John McKown of Motorola, once said at an ETSI
meeting "Simulation is like masturbation - the more you do of it, the
more you prefer it to the real thing".
This is from someone who has worked in an integrated circuit company for
17 years - and whose XYL has been an IC designer for 12 years!
