I claim to be no tube expert, but I *think* that the filaments will limit 
the amount of power you can get out of the tube.  Someone correct me if I 
am wrong, but the filament is effectively where you get your source of 
electrons from.  The more dissipation, the more electrons can be provided 
to be attrackted to the anode.  However, if you have a dissipation limit, 
then you have come up against a brick wall.  It matters not how much 
dissipation the anode can handle if you can't get the electrons there in 
the first place.

This may be an over simplification, but I think I have it sorta right.  
Now, perhaps they raised the filament dissipation rating and so you could 
have more electron emission and thereby increase your power.

Again, all this is trying to put some sense together from the little I do 
know about tube mechanics and from what Rich has said.

Well, if they design the filament helix properly, then yes, they could be 
designed out! :-)
