It depends on how the diode is used. At very low power
levels, diodes can give a linear power to current function.
This is used in the Rohde & Schwarz NAUS family, for
example, which have linear power scales without fancy
internal computation using just a (discrete) chopper
amplifier. They read mean power (same as a bolometer) very
reliably, even with multiple tones and/or high harmonic
levels. I could go on for hours - they are a lovely example
of how to do it right.
