Have AL-80 (not A or B) with single 3-500Z. The manual indicates that it
provides 0 - 30 negative volts for the transceiver input. The transceiver
is an FT-757GX which manual indicates that the ALC input voltage range
should be between 0 - 5 neg.

My concern is that I might damage the transceiver in some way if in
adjusting the ALC I allow in significantly more than 5 neg volts. How
should I approach this?

Also, the AL-80 manual says "proper adjustment is obtained by watching a
monitor scope for flat-topping and adjusting the ALC until peak clipping
does not occur." I think that means to adjust it right up to the point
where flat-topping does not occur. Is that correct and/or any better ideas
on how to adjust? - - I do have the scope but nothing more sophisticated
than that.

PS - Thanks for all previous input re: Excessive Grid Current - Adjusted
tuned input circuit - added capacitance where needed in tank circuit -
cleaned rf relay contacts. It behaves about like it should, now. Still have
some adjustment to do on the 80M tuned input circuit to get it right for the
75M portion of the band.
