Lets review an important principle of logic:
1. suppose that conditions A, B, and C all imply condition D
example:
- getting booted from the mailing list implies that one's posts will
not be remailed
- a transient internet connectivity problem implies that one's posts
will not be remailed
- a hardware malfunction on the server hosting the AMPS reflector
implies that one's posts will not be remailed
2. suppose that condition D is known to be true
example: one's posts are not being remailed
3. one may not conclude that condition A is true unless conditions B and C
are both false
example: there are many other conditions that result in one's posts not
being remailed; one must rule these out before concluding that "booting" has
occurred
Even when conditions B and C are known to be false, it is treacherous to
conclude that A is true -- unknown to our logician, there may be one or more
additional conditions that imply D.
