Thanks to the many who responded, many directly to me, off-list.  The
winning combination, IMO, is to

1. buy an RF Applications, Inc., VFD Series, directional, peak, wattmeter
<http://radiodan.com/rfapps/vfd.htm>, either the 3- or the 5-kW model, with
the SWR Alarm Relay option; and

2. use the SWR alarm relay to apply cutoff ALC voltage to the exciter; this
method protects the amplifier's relays, so it's better than just de-keying
the amp.


On <http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/40> I also found a bunch of
testimonials to this device/method.
