Hey, take it easy on Rube. He is getting a bad rap. Rube was really a
Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist who graduated in engineering from University
of California at Berkeley and started work with the Sewer Department of San
Francisco. After he worked at that for awhile he got enough ammunition to
propel him to be a cartoonist at the New York Evening Mail. According to the
official website http://www.rube-goldberg.com/html Rube was skeptical about
technology and made his "inventions" out of human, plant and animal parts.
"While most machines work to make difficult tasks simple, his inventions made
simple tasks amazingly complex. Dozens of arms, wheels, gears, handles, cups
and rods were put in motion by balls, canary cages, pails, boots bathtubs,
paddles, and even live animals for simple tasks like squeezing an orange for
juice..."
"Rube's drawings depict absurdly-connected machines functioning in extremely
complex and and roundabout ways to produce a simple end result; because of this
RUBE GOLDBERG has become associated with any convoluted system of achieving a
basic task."
The point is that Rube did not use junk box parts to save money or to use what
was at hand. He would often go out and buy new parts over the counter.
