Mark,
You are exactly correct. Many hours of research has been put into designs of tube audio and guitar amps just for adding the required distortion. The largest and most popular bands will not have nothing but tubes to get the sound created by distortion. Heck, they have the foot pedals for this very purpose, turning up and down the feedback. If folks heard the actual music or the singer, or band, they wouldn't be so "popular"! Marshall, Fender, and others have big write ups just about this very subject to promote sales.

That's very true. Tube amps are actually "dirtier" than agood SS amp, and THATS what puts the "personality" into the sound. Its especially true in single ended or push-pull guitar amplifiers, its a lot of where the "tone" comes from, and a lot comes from the effect the back emf of the speaker voice coil/magnet has on the tube output stage via the output transformer.
