My .02. If its cheaper and more profitable,that is the way the computer board 
builders/manufacturers will go.  Seems to me there is lesser amount of technology 
being introduced that is worthwhile, therefore less ways for the "snake oil" 
salesmen to sell the same old thing wrapped in a new package.
Fwiw, Commodore 64 peripherals were serial port, daisy chain connected.  Oddball 
connector to be sure, but it worked and there was only one style (their's) cable needed.
But then the 64 went away (outlived its time) and Commodore corp went along with the 
rest of the computer world until Commodore  Corp outlived its time.
As the old axiom sez, "gotta look back to make sure we don't do it over." Or 
something like that.
Newer is not necessarily better, just more "gee whiz" added to the pot.  Does anyone 
*really* think that there is $19.95-$29.95 of engineering and material contained in 
a RS-233 to USB 1.0-2.0 converter?
