I believe there's some validity to Rich's point, although I'm a firm
believer in 4-wire 240VAC circuits, and both of my older Alpha amplifiers
are configured as such.
But what bothers me about codes is that they slowly evolve over time under
the pretense that new technologies, and learned safety practices are the
exclusive drivers for the code changes. I cannot completely accept that
rationale.
Every time I need to replace my water heater (approx. 5 years or so), I find
that the emergency drain pipe diameter creeps up a quarter-inch. 1/2" was
once fine, then 3/4", and now all new installations require 1" CPVC here in
my area. Couldn't we have gone from 1/2" to 1" and had been done with it?
Will there be some future revelation which dictates a new 1 1/4" pipe
requirement the next time I replace the water heater? The same is true of
the water heater riser plumbing. I've had mine redesigned as a result of
code changes twice in the past seven years.
So, it's not all purely about safety -- some code changes are just easier to
pass off that way to the general population who knows no better.
