I think it's important to consider the difference between the class AB 
biassing that we are all used to in our amplifiers, and true class A 
which is usually reserved for specialist ultra-linear requirements. As a 
simple rule of thumb, ultra linear class A operation will have the 
maximum peak output power not much over 10% of the dc power dissipated 
in the device, and the current in the device will not alter with signal 
level.
