So, shouldn't any new amplifier design include a pi-L tank, or external
lowpass or bandpass filtering?

One of my friends had an Icom rig he was using on Field Day. His station
was about 100 feet away from everyone else, but they all complained that he
bothered them on other bands. He, complained that they bothered him.

I put a spectrum analyzer on his rig and there was crap all over. We built
bandpass filters using toroids, which fixed his problem. He took the
spectrum analyzer along to prove it. However, he still got crap from their
rigs and put the spectrum analyzer on their rigs and found all of them had
white noise and crap everywhere. He has been trying to convicne them to put
bandpass filters on their rigs, but since he does not bother them, they are
not in anyhurry to fix anything.

Bandpass filters solve a lot of problems. The little direct conversion
transceiver I have is marvelous with a bandpass filter in front of it. No
more broadcast stations.

Using free filter software, it is easy to design excellent filters.
