I'd suggest testing the tubes first before building the amp around
them. Since you are going to build the power supply anyway, do that
first. Then rig up a temporary jig with alligator clips and hose
clamps and the appropriate meters and run the tubes at full
dissipation, but only for a few seconds unless you have forced air
cooling. A few seconds will tell you whether the tubes are good and
whether they are reasonably matched. Use a variac to bring up the
anode voltage slowly, watching for arcs or other nasties.
Do not use long lead lengths with this setup or you may inadvertently
create a VHF oscillator. Connect a .01 uF or larger cap from cathode
to grid with very short leads and that should make it stable.
