Your scenario is really  the only one anyone would use Doug. 
The real reason is to run more than the 2.5kW output the 
single tube amp would do. A single 8877 run full tilt is 
cleaner than any amateur exciter made, the exception being a 
class A operated MK V FT1000MP.

You also have to remember at the time that amp was designed 
the legal power was 1000 watts dc plate input power 
indicated on the plate current and plate voltage meters 
minus the driver power. Even a single 3-500Z could exceed 
the legal power at that time. It wasn't until the 80's that 
1500 watts output became legal.
