About glass tubes for homebrew HV fuses, a long ceramic solenoid wire-wound 
could conceivably have a wire fuse element running through it, and filled 
with sand like a self contained device. Ends could be taped shut or soft 
plugged so as to relieve pressure during operation of the fuse. Fancy sand I 
think can be purchased at pet fish tank stores?
