nothing else just to spite the pimp who wants to make money from a 40 year old
back catalog to which he did not contribute

I totally concur.
I think we as hams might be slightly guilty of contributing to the
problem, though. In years past, these manuals have been listed on
eBay either bound or on CD, and rather than do a comprehensive search
for a free copy, some folks have just paid the money.
Somewhere along the line, someone noticed, and decided to buy the IP
rights in order to become the recipient of what must have looked like
a dandy income stream. They must have figured that there was a high
demand for these things for them to be listed constantly like they
are/were.
I think we can count on essential ham cheapness to make certain that
this venture is never profitable. Most hams are Internet savvy at
this point, although I'm not sure who among us was buying the eBay
manuals...or why. Knowing hams, it had to be a minority of folks who
assumed without looking that nobody still had the manuals and ponied
up the money for them. Even then, for every CD sold, the average ham
would have made dozens of copies to hand out.
The eBay vendors were likely thinking that if anybody could be induced
to buy for any reason, it was worth the time to download something
free, burn it on a 10 cent CD blank, and list it at 99 cents with a $5
shipping and handling charge. With no cost but the time and the CD
blank, it was essentially all profit. I found it distasteful as a
practice, but like SPAM, there's always a bottom feeder to send it and
a clueless P.T. Barnum-style idiot ready to be separated from his
money. We'll never know what the current IP holder paid, but I can't
imagine they'll ever make it back. If they're publicly listed,
it'd
likely be a great stock to short all the way into the ground.
