We could beat this thread to death, but I believe it is EXACTLY the
folks not versed in transmission line theory who SHOULD worry about
SWR. At the most basic level, SWR is a good indication of any gross
antenna or transmission line problems.
If you put up a shiny new dipole, properly cut, with nice new coax and
your SWR is 10:1, you have a problem.
If your SWR has been 1.5:1 for years and one day it measures 3:1, you
likewise have a problem.
Those are precisely the kinds of SWR issues a "non-technical" person
should care about.
