I like to put a resistor in the primary of a filament transformer, because it 
is easier to find a standard value.  However, that is not possible if the 
transformer also contains other secondaries.

But, either in the primary or secondary, resistance is good because it limits 
"cold" current automatically.

Kevin has a good idea about using the "white" wire.  Although teflon was 
standard in the aircraft industry for years, it had problems, because it flows. 
 Today, teflon insulation has been replace by tefzel, which is also white - and 
does not flow.

Aircraft repair shops always have #20 and #22 tefzel wire for sale.
