So is silver, for that matter, and a lot of plating shops are set up to
first silver-plate, then gold-plate over it. Advantages: gold on the
outside, where it shields the silver from oxidation and is decently
conductive, and silver next down, where it is very nicely conductive.
They do it for jewelery items, where the technique is called "vermeil",
but it's the same for coils as for medallions.
