The trouble is, few homebrewers copy an established design exactly.
They substitute parts, change the layout, alter values, etc, etc, and
that's where problems can creep in. Knowing how to fix the new
problems takes a fair amount of know-how. 

I don't mean to discourage anyone from trying, just keep your eyes
wide open, understand what's happening in your circuitry and ask
questions.
