That's exactly right. AES Standards call for the shield to go ONLY to
pin 1 of a cable-mounted connector, but to for pin 1 of connectors
within EQUIPMENT to go to the shielding enclosure. There are VERY GOOD
reasons for the cable shield NOT going to the shell of the connector on
the cable, and it has to do with avoiding power-related noise currents
on cable shields when they are plugged into wiring panels that carry
audio signals around a facility (like a church, theater, stadium, or
board room).
The the correct word for "phasing" mics is POLARITY, not phase. Phase
is measured in degrees, while polarity is normal or reversed.
