One more thing I forgot to mention about the PROPER installation of a
PL-259. Make sure you clean all the flux from the center pin after you
solder it! Also, when soldering the center pin, DO NOT get solder on the
outside of the pin! And if you do, wipe it off while the solder is still
hot. If you don’t get it completely off, it will cause your female (adapter
of connector) receptacle pins to he flared out and cause poor connections in
the future. I really don’t like to file the solder off either. If the
connector is silver plated (which you should use) it will remove the silver
plating from the pin which is also not good.

It doesn't look like a voltage induced failure, by the looks of it, the
spring just lost tension, and when it is COLD out, it was fine. Looks like
a thermal cycling failure

Like I said, just going to go with N connectors, but no huge rush, as I
replaced the barrel connector, and all is fine right now.
I've never loved the PL-259, and probably never will. I'd love to see
readily available 7-16 DIN, which gives you the best of N connectors and
PL-259
