The AL-82 uses a pair of 3-500Z's and 1500W is a strain on them if long term reliability is wanted.

Is the power supply adequate for 1500W CW in contest service?

Yes on CW, but don't run full power on RTTY. Mine smoked the tank coil
twice, once on 80 and once on 160. I asked the designer, W8JI, about it and
his reply was "Who runs RTTY on 160 meters?" Well, me for one. :-)

It was the polystyrene support rods on the coils that melted. As I recall,
the higher bands don't use that kind of coil and there was no problem there.
If you really want the AL-82 you might consider cutting a hole in the side
and mounting a fan to cool the tank coils. That would void the warranty of
course.

Also, of all the amps I ever owned, the only one that ever blew a tube was
my AL-82. Fortunately, Ameritron replaced it under warranty. That is a very expensive tube if you have to replace it yourself. If I were going to buy an
Ameritron I'd get the one with two 3-500z's. Much cheaper to replace.
