To clarify the terms of discussion are these definitions correct?
Conjecture: A proposed explanation which lacks a clear means of
testing and is one among several.
Hypothesis: A proposed explanation which provides for a means of
testing, is untested, and there are competing hypotheses.
Postulate/Theory: A proposed explanation which provides a means for
testing, is untested, yet is generally accepted as correct.
Proven Fact: Demonstrated via the "scientific method".
Examples/Illustrations:
Conjecture is common in the psycho-social area (some elements have
progressed beyond that and some live in a murky bio-mechanical
realm).
Hypothesis is common to big-science such as creation vs evolution,
black holes, quantum-physics, time-travel, extreme math, religious
faith, etc.
Postulate/Theory is common to genetic manipulation, many cancer
treatments, some physics Newton's theories (due to missing variables),
Einstein considered more variables & is generally considered
more-correct (but some doubt).
Proven fact is common to most math, basic physics, basic chemistry.
