I would suspect that fiberglass was added later. The two originals I have
here are some form of plastic browning and cracking with age.

Similar issue, removed the old fiberglass type supports. Used sheet of
plastic about 3/16" thick and cut new somewhat square supports, could have
been 1/4".
The sheet is ldpe type plastic. Found LPDE local - 1x1 foot piece and
bought it.
