How does a torrid used on 160/80 meters get hot on 10 meters if it’s
> shorted out?

Is *only* the toroid for 160/80 shorted out (bypassed) or is all of
the unused inductor (15-160) shorted? If the latter and the 10 meter
coil is in line with the 15/20/40 meter coil, the 10 meter coil will
couple to the 15/20/40 meter coil. The 15/20/40 meter coil is in
series with the 80/160 toroidal coil and circulating currents will
flow in the entire string (by transformer action).

Placing the 10 meter coil at right angles to the 15/20/40 coil *or*
separately shorting the 80/160 toroidal coil should prevent current
flow (and the generation of heat) in the 80/160 coil.
