Kevin--I had a TS-820S for many years, "upgraded" to a TS-430S to get the
WARC bands, and now have a TS-930SAT with all the good filters. The 930S
is simply awesome. The combination of the receiver sensitivity, filters,
and "gadgets" on the front panel make it possible to work thru QRM like
I've never imagined.
The Rx in the 430S SUCKS!! It's fine for a weekend portable rig or mobile,
but good grief--the filters, even the "best" Kenwood ones, are terrible in
shape characteristics both around the center frequency and the skirts away
from it. Working DX or contests with the 430S is a real challenge. My
TS-820S with Fox Tango filters had a *much* better receiver than the 430S.

I have used the TS930S since 1986, and the IC735 since 1990. (If you
consider a used TS930, early serial numbers should be avoided - but I
can't recall the break point.) I like the receiver in the IC 735 just
slightly better. I use them both nearly every day. I've heard the
IC751A has a great rcvr but I haven't used one. The Yaseu FT990 is
also vy popular. I used it briefly during the last CQ WW cw contest.
The contest stations were 3-FT990, 2-TS930S, a TenTec, and one other.
The 990 is impressive but I have not compared it side by side with the
others. Someone else may have specs comparing noise floor, etc. When
I look at a new rig I assume the bells and whistles (like filter
options and memories) are comparable so I concentrate on the receiver
specs. The one with the best receiver wins my desire.

It has been suggested that I used my asterisks to indicate low power,
instead of computer checked log. Since it looks like I am going to
have 100 percent of the logs entered this time, this sounds like a
good idea.
Since there isn't a box on the summary sheet for low power, there maybe
some people who don't indicate it on their summary sheet. Hopefully the
word will get out.
For any of you who were low power and have already sent in their summary
sheet, but were low power, please let me know.
Also, please remember to send in a diskette with your log in ASCII format
if possible.

I goofed, DKEY does NOT work correctly with CT, at least it does do what
I'm attempting to (map = to +). I ran DKEY it and translated the keys
just fine at the DOS prompt, and I mistakenly assumed it would work with
CT. I guess I'll have to start playing around with RBKEYSWP now.
By the way, I also gave the wrong FTP address, it should be oak.oakland.edu
and not oakland.oak.edu.

This program seemslike a real gem and much easier to use than CT. But I
seem to have a problem with getting the Packet to work on COM2. The Radio
seems to work OK on COM1 . Anyone out there have similar problems?
Guess if I don't fix this I will just have to operate the old fashioned (!)
way and find the dx myself without the cluster.!!

However, I have one problem. A friend is using an
XT computer, and I dont seem to be able to get it
working on it for him. When it loads, the menu box
(where you choose the contest) is blank. The
heading comes up okay, but the box is empty!!!!!
When you hit return, it loads up the contest, but
again the boxes are empty???
It works perfectly on the 286/386 computers we have.
The XT is 8088 with 20Meg, 640k RAM and Hercules graphics (I have
a utility to change the video mode to MDA/CGA etc but it makes
no difference)

I forwarded this mail to the writer of the PED Mas III, JE3MAS.
He tried to fix the problem and rewrite the BIOS call.
I forwaded the new PED410.exe to EI7DNB the otherday.
Today, I got the report that it works fine on his friend's 8088/XT.
So anyone wishes to run the PED on your XT, or replace old one
to this new one on BBS etc, send me a mail.
I'm willing to send "PED410.EXE" by uuencoded to you.
(You have to get the data from other sources)

Sorry this is late. Just got back.
I guess I am too much a product of computer contesting but I am in awe of the
guys that do this contest with a pencil and paper. I knew I forgot something
when we packed. I had a computer but no software so I thought, no problem I'll
just log by hand, ha ha... Sorry to all the people I tried to or did dupe.
Just about lost it completely on 40 meters. Couldn't remember who I had worked
and was clueless about making a useful dupe sheet. I couldn't even count.
Sorry N0AXL, you and K1CLN we're BOTH number 53. Oh the shame! Maybe I can
blame this on too much Mardi Gras.
