I got the following advice from Jeff, R0Y regarding mults. When you get
advice from THE expert, it pays to listen.
Tune the low end of the band for some Caribbean mults. I didn't
this time but K5GN worked a YS1 on 40. I worked a KL7 on 20
about 0230Z w/ a second radio CQ, etc.
Sure, luck is a big part of it too. Like when WA5BDU in AR
called me on 40 and gave me #1, or K0ERM in SD on 80
who gave me #7, or me finally finding KM5H on 80 who I hadn't
heard on 20/40.

Dick, you are absolutely right. I'm sure as I get to be a better sprinter,
I'll pick up the tricks and bag a few extra mults.
I will indulge myself and mention that when I got bitten by the contest bug
in 1990 after a long hiatus, the first contest I tried was a CW sprint. It
was a humbling experience, as I made about 3 contacts in 15 minutes and
quit.
What was humbling was that I couldn't copy anyone at the speed involved,
let alone figure out what was going on. Two years ago, Mark, WA6OTU, let me
watch him do a sprint, and I got a clue as to what to do. Now, after a few
years of serious contesting, it was very rewarding to do a sprint, not be
intimidated by the 34 WPM CW and actually turn in a middling performance. I
don't think I'll ever make top 10 in one of these, but 300 Qs is not out of
the question, and for me a satisfactory longer term goal.

I hesitate to suggest this, but since getting those extra few
mults is more than just chance, needing as it does a knowledge
of propagation on the different bands, perhaps it would be good
to add the mults per band for the actual multiplier.
I hate to suggest it cos it would mean mucking with the rules of
a successful and popular contest, and it would be even more of a
handicap to those who still haven't figured out what to do with
even one radio and half a brain (I speak from experience here).
Perhaps it would be most unfair because of the different spread of
day/night from different parts of the country during those 4 hours,
so forget it...

That is why we always are lightyears ahead. (Ough)
Then again, max legal HF power in Belgium is 150 W. Yak. Only exception are
the OT* contest stations who can run 2 kW.

Dave sure got into it. 5K qso's, wow! and there was not "winner"
either. What Dave didn't say is why HE got so excited. But it was
obvious from his mail - the piles. They were magnificent. I have been on
expeditions that didn't have piles that big. And, despite what I have
seen posted on the reflector, most of the ops were doing a darn good job.
Very diciplined in general, like the big JA piles of olde.
No doubt, many of these new hams have caught the bug and we will see
them in there this fall.
TOP Ten Reason's This was a BIG success:
10. This wasn't a contest, it was an event. Joe Ham likes events.
9. You didn't have to beat anyone to get a prize.
8. DX was getting into it, too.
7. People like using their names.
6. I was never asked to slow down. (maybe i go slower than Tim)
5. CW LIVES!
4. Rates were always over 100/hr on cw and 200/hr on phone.
3. People commented frequently about how much fun they were having.

1. You could use "last two" and nobody would yell at you.

Someone in Phoenix might like to comment on this, but my brother- in-law's
house in Phoenix has 3 phase; it is available throughout his subdivision
(just medium sized homes) supposedly to make swimming pool equipment and air
