While at Dayton this year I heard some guys talking about operating
160M on Field Day. Most were saying that 0400z was the time that
everyone heads for 160. Can anyone verify this time?
At the WD8E Field Day site we'll have a full size dipole at 90 ft, we
thought about launching a balloon and vertical wire, but I think the
dipole would be more practical, any comments on this?

Picture the scene:
Amateur radio loses 2m and 70cm. All over the world, tens of thousands of
EME and VHF contests enthusiasts are told their thousands of dollars worth
of transceivers, Yagi arrays, 3CX1500s, etc are now worthless, because
big-business LEO operators have "bought" their frequencies. A fair minority
would be tempted to "go out with a bang" and take a potshot or two at the
new LEOs. Perhaps jam them, deafen them with a few pulsed transmissions, try
cracking their telemetry codes, or whatever - it would be crazy to believe
they either wouldn't or couldn't . It would also be VERY difficult to catch
the perpetrators (especially if they were portable).
On a larger scale, all the millions of handhelds and mobile rigs would wind
up at flea markets and car boot sales (how many of you would smash up your
handies or put them in the trash?), and be snapped up by people with no
knowledge of the havoc they would cause.
The massive QRM problems must, in reality, put pay to any chance of
"recycling" 2m or 70cms. If our national societies present this very real
scenario (albeit in more diplomatic terms), and highlight the very real law
enforcement problems which governments would face, then I don't think the
LEO threat is one we need lose too much sleep over.

Wait a second! I don't see the possible connection between the loss of an
international agreement that all HF amatuer licenses have "knowledge" of
the International Morse code, (An agreement which has been broken by
several parties, most notably Japan) and loss of CW spectrum.
Last time I looked, CW was usable EVERYWHERE on any amatuer band.
It is OK to be concerned, but let's keep ourselves grounded in reality.
