In the next week I'll be travelling to Rochester NY. Would like to
know any way to meet contesters and if it were any asociation to visit
while in the city. Also I could help to any Ham from Rochester to get
the eagerly awaited QSL from Argentina. Just let me know it.

I have heard that one can protect the second radio's input stage with a
25mA fuse or a small light globe. Someone pointed out to me that the
advantage of a light globe is that it does not blow, just goes high
resistance while it glows. In other words, it's a resetable fuse.
Anyone with experience on fuses/light globes for 2nd radio protection
and if there is possibly a Radio Shack part number for a suitable light
globe. (Or is it called a light bulb)

Charlie lived 200 miles west of me, and we worked in every
domestic cw contest. There's a huge mountain range between
us, and almost all of the QSO's were via some kind of scatter.
There was no mistaking that weak signal, which was
instantly recognizable because of the distinctive fist, the
slower speed, the characteristic flutter, and the letter "Q",
which somehow always got through. It's hard to believe that
there won't be any more of those QSO's, which had become a
tradition over so many contests and so many years.
Whenever his work with Caltrans took him near the Arizona
border, he would drop in and we'd talk at length about contesting
and life in general. Beneath that bear-like exterior was a highly
intelligent, gentle, and sensitive individual. Those sessions will
indeed be missed by both myself and my wife Jacki.
Good DX'ing Charlie. We'll have a cool one in your memory
at the WRTC. I'm sure you'll be there.

Cheer up, it probably won't be as bad as you think!
I lived in Tokyo at the height of the Japanese no code licensing boom. =
They were licensing new hams faster than you could work 'em. Over 1 =
Million licenses were issued in a country the size of California.
JA has no official CW or SSB segments. Just the usual gentlemen's =
agreements same as most other countries.
Know what? Even though the phone bands were crowded with people having =
a good time and enjoying radio, the CW bands were still there and very =
active. I doubt the USA will ever have this density of ham population =
even if the FCC started paying people to get their ticket.
Its true that JA hams are recognized as being the most polite on the =
planet. However, in general the US hams are equally compliant with the =
rules and band plans. =20
Here is what you can do to help...
1. Promote CW as being fun. (It is!) People will be curious and give =
it a try. Some number will love it and others won't. I bet that enough =
will like it to keep it a viable part of the hobby for another 20-30 =
years (can you say digital?).
2. Promote ham radio in any/all forms. The more people in the hobby, =
the more people who will fall for #1 above.
3. Promote contesting. It is still the best way to learn and test =
operating proficiency. See #1. [Field Day is an excellent example of =
the general interest in operating/contesting among the general ham =
population!]

I have been trying off and on for a couple months to try to get PED to work
with my new SB32 pnp board (latest 16 bit Sound Blaster board, does Plug-n-Play)
. Got a true SB mainly for PED and the variants. Works fine with VPED and
RUFZ (w/RFZSOUND). With three different sources of PED411i, I always get No
Sound Board Detected on all attempts and attempts at changing settings. The
Plug-n-Play sound board sets itself up automatically even though I am using
Windows 3.1 and DOS 6.22 (Not Win 95).
It sets up: BLASTER=A220 I10 D0 H5 P300 E620 T6 <--- T6 req'd for SB32, I
have tried different other settings
Any help or a source of help would be appreciated.
