Help-Testing 50 OHM Coax

After 10+ years of having various sections of 50 OHM Coax on the tower,
I figure it was time to check to see if any of this should be replaced.
Any suggetions on a easy way to check 50 Ohm Coax?
Would a MFJ-259 HF analyzer & Resistance Meter be of any value in checking
coax without the antennas attached?

Here's a copy of my previous posting on the subject. The MFJ analyzer
just doesn't read high enough values of swr to be useful (unless the
coax is _really_ bad). 

There were some negative comments on this method. Some folks questioned
the accuracy, especially for _very_ low loss coax, with the antennas
still
connected. Some folks questioned the accuracy of the AEA and Autec
analyzers for high values of swr. It works for me, as verified by several
tests of brand new coax, using several different antennas. Measured 
results agreed closely with the specification values for the new cable.

Of course, the procedure is even easier with the antennas disconnected.
In that case, you don't have to find a frequency where the swr peaks.
Any frequency will do, preferably toward the high end. 73.

Here's a quick method for checking
cable loss from inside the shack, with the antennas connected.
The basic concept was described somewhere in QST in the past few
years.

Plug your Autec or AEA analyzer into the feedline in the shack
and tune it to a frequency where it shows a peak SWR. At this
frequency, the antenna, whatever it is, will be a damn good
approximation (DGA) of an open or short circuit. The frequency
doesn't have to be in the ham bands. Start at 30 MHz and work
down. Plug the SWR into the following equation which is for
calculating loss in a shorted or open line:

                                     SWR + 1
Loss in dB = 10 log  ----------------------------------
                                     SWR - 1


For example, suppose you find a peak in the SWR (7 to 1)
at 25 MHz.

                             8
loss =  10 log  ------------------------
                             6

loss = 1.25 dB

All you have to do now is to figure out what the loss would be
in a brand new piece of coax of the same length at 25 MHz. 
Just look it up in the coax charts, then decide if it's worth
while to replace the old cable with a new one.

N8AAT noted ham radio (or at least morse code) shown in the movie 
"Independence Day".
Also, in another summer blockbuster, "Phenomonon", on of the main 
characters is a ham. The movie shows his typical ham shack complete with 
QSL's pinned on the wall, junk everywhere, and him operating what appears 
to be a TS-940. You could see a vertical on the roof. In the movie our 
ham was a "good ol boy" and called cq for Dianna Ross (is she a ham?)- 
but when they got down to business he went from ssb to cw with a straight 
key. Our man was obvouisly not a contester- they gave him the call 
WB6QLF- and judging from the way he handled the straight key I can see 
why- hehe. This all added to my enjoyment of the fun movie and was 
another nice PR promo for amateur radio, and cw. Maybe that same friend 
of amateur radio was writing for this movie also.

I think there's some confusion.  From what I recall of the recent WSJ
article (too bad I didn't save it), there was some discussion abt how the
tower regulation provisions of the new Telecom Act have not been as
effective as the PCS/cellular industry had hoped.  Recent court rulings
such as the infamous one in Medina, WA have somewhat disheartened the
industry.  I'm sure they'd like to see more effective legislation, but I
don't know of any draft language that's out there yet.

Attached is the relevant section of the Telecom Act.  Note that amateur
radio is clearly NOT included in the provisions.  One of the key points is
that no local govt is allowed to regulate PCS/cellular towers on the basis
of RF exposure safety issues.

But here's the frightening part--the FCC is now required to promulgate new
rules for RF exposure standards within the next month or so.  With such a
paucity of really good medical data, there's no telling what standards the
FCC might adopt.  I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more press because I
think there's at least a moderate chance the FCC's new rules could have an
impact on CONTEST stations. 

We'll just have to wait and see.  Having spent much of the last couple
years on M Street, I've stopped trying to outguess the Federal Cash Cow.

  SEC. 704. FACILITIES SITING; RADIO FREQUENCY EMISSION STANDARDS.
   
   (a) NATIONAL WIRELESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS SITING POLICY- Section 332(c)
       (47 U.S.C. 332(c)) is amended by adding at the end the following
       new paragraph:
   
        `(7) PRESERVATION OF LOCAL ZONING AUTHORITY-
   
             `(A) GENERAL AUTHORITY- Except as provided in this
                 paragraph, nothing in this Act shall limit or affect the
                 authority of a State or local government or
                 instrumentality thereof over decisions regarding the
                 placement, construction, and modification of personal
                 wireless service facilities.
                 
             `(B) LIMITATIONS-
   
                  `(i) The regulation of the placement, construction, and
                      modification of personal wireless service
                      facilities by any State or local government or
                      instrumentality thereof--
   
                       `(I) shall not unreasonably discriminate among
                           providers of functionally equivalent services;
                           and
                           
                       `(II) shall not prohibit or have the effect of
                           prohibiting the provision of personal wireless
                           services.
   
                  `(ii) A State or local government or instrumentality
                      thereof shall act on any request for authorization
                      to place, construct, or modify personal wireless
                      service facilities within a reasonable period of
                      time after the request is duly filed with such
                      government or instrumentality, taking into account
                      the nature and scope of such request.
   
                  `(iii) Any decision by a State or local government or
                      instrumentality thereof to deny a request to place,
                      construct, or modify personal wireless service
                      facilities shall be in writing and supported by
                      substantial evidence contained in a written record.
   
                  `(iv) No State or local government or instrumentality
                      thereof may regulate the placement, construction,
                      and modification of personal wireless service
                      facilities on the basis of the environmental
                      effects of radio frequency emissions to the extent
                      that such facilities comply with the Commission's
                      regulations concerning such emissions.
   
                  `(v) Any person adversely affected by any final action
                      or failure to act by a State or local government or
                      any instrumentality thereof that is inconsistent
                      with this subparagraph may, within 30 days after
                      such action or failure to act, commence an action
                      in any court of competent jurisdiction. The court
                      shall hear and decide such action on an expedited
                      basis. Any person adversely affected by an act or
                      failure to act by a State or local government or
                      any instrumentality thereof that is inconsistent
                      with clause (iv) may petition the Commission for
                      relief.
   
             `(C) DEFINITIONS- For purposes of this paragraph--
   
                  `(i) the term `personal wireless services' means
                      commercial mobile services, unlicensed wireless
                      services, and common carrier wireless exchange
                      access services;
   
                  `(ii) the term `personal wireless service facilities'
                      means facilities for the provision of personal
                      wireless services; and
   
                  `(iii) the term `unlicensed wireless service' means the
                      offering of telecommunications services using duly
                      authorized devices which do not require individual
                      licenses, but does not mean the provision of
                      direct-to-home satellite services (as defined in
                      section 303(v)).'.
   
   (b) RADIO FREQUENCY EMISSIONS- Within 180 days after the enactment of

Hi folks,

Freely plundering the resource that is this reflector, I'd like to know your
views and experiences of fixed directional (tx/rx) antennas for 80m (for
CQWW). The system will be temporary, pointing at continental US. We have
plenty of space, but lack the hardware to go much above 70ft. 

Do we go for a broadside vertical array? Or should we be looking at some
kind of wire beam / line of dipoles? Or something else entirely? At present
we use a simple delta loop, apex at 75ft. Both practical and theoretical
ruminations are welcome.

I thought that was a gag call--QLF meaning, as most of us know, "Now send 
with your LEFT foot." But, in fact, in belongs to an Advanced class 
licensee in Ventura, CA.

So was that HIS station you saw? At least he has a decent CONTEST radio, 
if not effective antennas.

Subject: Kenwood remote vfo

Anyone have a manual for the remote VFO-230?   Our club station uses
a TS-830 with remove vfo-230 and after many years of use the rig and
vfo are suddenly not communicating.  The vfo looks as if it's doing 
its thing, but the "main" light stays on when the 'vfo' one comes on 
and there's no effect on the 830's frequency.  The connecting cable 
checks out OK (i.e. corresponding pins are connected, no shorts).

We'd like to get this fixed by next weekend's IARU C-O-N-T-E-S-T, and
have the manual for the 830 but not the vfo.   If you have stuff for 
the vfo and would be willing to copy and mail at my expense, please
send me e-mail first.  If you have brilliant suggestions for where
to look for the problem, ditto.  I've looked inside both units for
obvious burns, loose wires, but that's about the extent of my expertise.
There sure is more stuff inside that remove vfo than I had imagined!

Thank you to all who took the time to send ideas on getting parts
to fix a Heath SB-200 amp.

I got the power supply retrofit kit from Harbach Electronics in
FL and installed it and brought an old amp back to life.  Even
getting a little bit more CW power out, due to stiffer power
supply regulation.

Subject: How do I fix a Hy-Gain Balun?

Last winter, my rotor came apart and my TH-7 started 
"windmilling".  This pulled coax out of the balun that 
comes with the antenna.  There is a SO-239 type 
connecter in it and the threaded sleeve pulled away 
from the bottom of the connector, leaving the center 
insulator.  
 
The balun enclosure is made of plastic, and seems to be  
glued together.  I am at a loss as how to repair 
the SO-239 without destroying the plastic enclosure. 
 
Has anyone had this problem with their CONTEST  
station and found a good way to fix it?  If you had 
to destroy the plastic enclosure, what did you to 
replace it?

Tom, I was able to pry the case apart at the glued seams with a minimum 
of damage.  However, I ended up replacing mine with a "current balun".  I 
burned out two of the BN-86 baluns that come with the TH7-DXX proving 
that it will not withstand the legal limit of power.  A current balun 
only costs the price of eight feet of RG-213 coax.  Simply coil up the 
eight feet into six turns and tape it or secure with tie wraps.  Put a 
PL259 on one end to splice it to your existing feedline.  Seperate the 
braid and center conductor on the other end and connect to the straps that 
the BN-86  formerly were bolted to.  This setup has withstood my AL-1500 
for over a  year and appears to provide every bit as much isolation as 
the BN-86 did.  For more details, if needed, check the ARRL Antenna Book.

Has anyone had any practical experience with fractal antenna design? =
There is
an artical in this months DX Magazine that gives a  very brief =
description of a simple fractal design.....one that should (if true) =
could prove a boon to city lot contesters-gain on the low bands! Is =
there any rotatable applications of this design? Will it work in =
parasitic arrays? My curiosity has been piqued....Thanks for reading =
