ND3A WRTC Ideas

FROM Dennis AA7VB ex KZ5M P40Z VP2EWW
I read through Rod's comments with much interest. Although some of them have
some merit, I feel compelled to offer another perspective on some of the
others. I most certainly am not WRTC material myself but am at the very
least emotionly involved with this event because of my love for the hobby and
our particular "dysfunction", as some would say, within it. Many many of
those who might qualify for a spot in the next WRTC are personal friends of
mine and I happily spend time with these guys and gals in the heat of battle
or in social gatherings. Since I own a fire protection business or two, I
too own a flame suit so fire away after reading my observations!

1. PLAN NOW. I most certainly agree that chosing a host for the next WRTC
gathering be done as soon as possible. I am sure that our friend K7SS will
be sucking up input just as rapidly as he drills all of us in contests and he
will have a solid recommendation as soon as an logical answer emerges. I sat
on the Board that put the last Houston ARRL National Convention together; was
President of the Texas DX Society and driving force for the world record
efforts from XE2FU; drank my way into the initial meeting of the minds
(somewhat soggy at the time) that somehow managed to come up with one good
idea - the NAQP; and last but not least, was one of the Armadillo Run
organizers. These facts mean nothing other than to qualify me to say that I
do know what takes to put something like the WRTC event on and if I had that
challenge looking me down the throat, I would want as much time as possible
to insure that I did the participants a good job.

2. WHERE SHOULD IT BE? Though I agree that it could probably be held on
one of the other heavily populated continents, I do not agree that Sydney
would be a good choice. I have operated from the Pacfic before and even in
the best of conditions there can be many long hours of nothing but hiss in
the RX out there waiting for a band to open again to one of the population
centers around the globe. I also don't feel that media coverage is as
important as others might suggest. This event is for us. All of us Little
Pistols and the Big Guns. This is our moment to hear some of the Best of the
Best slug it out on a relatively even playing feel. My experience with
trying to share the excitement of my contest operating with non-contesters
particularly non-hams has been less than rewarding. Kinda like some chess
geek trying to get me worked up into a froth over a Nationa Match...who
cares!! What charge can that boring stuff bring a guy and what redeeming
social value does it offer? Probably as much as ham radio contesting does in
the eyes of the majority of the world....

3. SHARE WHAT CONTEST? I do not agree with Rod at all on this subject. I
feel that the ARRL and CQWW DX contests are absolutely the wrong events to
immerse the WRTC in. First off, they are single mode events and I for one
particularly enjoy the current format that inherently brings all around
talented teams to the table, not just wiz kids from one mode or the other.
The IARU has always enjoyed the reputatuion as a "friendly" contest without
so much emphase on station capabilities as it does on overall knowledge of
propogation to find those mults while at the same time maximizing rates using
any or all modes. I cannot think of any other multmode single weekend
contest that offers the advantages that the IARU has for testing the teams'
overall capability to "contest" taking in all phases of the game. At the
moment, we may be somewhat sunspot challenged but that will change
significantly before the next WRTC.

4. ADDING THE WRTC STATIONS AS MULTS I suggest this change would only
create bigger numbers but would not change the outcome of the competition so
why bother? I am not certain what Rob ment in his writings that " The WRTC
stations could be made to count as multipliers as in the IARU..." They did
not count as mults or I would have been a very rich man at P40Z !!

5. MAKE 'EM MULTI-SINGLE There may be some merit in this suggestion
though again I do not think it would have changed the outcome any. The
results clearly show that those teams that felt mults warrented the effort of
significant S & P using the station constraints made the best of it. Giving
them and the others the M/S capablitlity would not have changed the decision
process much I don't think and things would not have turned out much
different. Also, I believe this change would complicate the station layout
considerably possibly awarding some advantage to the those teams with access
to more expensive techno toys--something this event takes great pains to
avoid.

6. MY COMPLIMENTS TO ND3A His desire to offer ideas is just one more
reminder for those who put these WRTC events on that they aren't just for the
particpants. All of use serious and not so serious contesters are proud of
out Best of the Best and we share in the excitement and fun associated with
the event. I doubt that most of the particpants and probably some of the
organizers understand the depth of "involvement" the rest of us out here feel
in WRTC. Rusty, W6OAT, clearly did and we all thank him and the others for
making sure we were there with them even if it could only be via an RF media.

ON W1AW/??? Put me on the list that feels if you are going to move the call
around, move it A L L around. And with that said, let me say I am glad
I am not the poor slob who will make the decision where it goes!! I should
say that I am not in full agreement with moving it around at all. It seems
kind of sacrilege in my 'ol traditionist mind.

Thanks for your moments to absorb my thoughts.......

Just as a reminder that not everything is "intellectually-phobic", ESPN2
devoted a significant amount of relatively prime time to the national
spelling bee this year (makes two years in a row) along with typical
sports-type format (although with the hype-gain appropriately down a
notch) and color commentary. I have told them I appreciated their
attempt to balance the priorities. It probably wouldn't hurt for others
to do the same, if contesting (or chess, or math competition, etc.) is
ever to enjoy similar recognition.

4. ADDING THE WRTC STATIONS AS MULTS I suggest this change would
only
create bigger numbers but would not change the outcome of the competition so
why bother? I am not certain what Rob ment in his writings that " The WRTC
stations could be made to count as multipliers as in the IARU..." They did
not count as mults or I would have been a very rich man at P40Z !!

I'm sorry for the confusion Dennis. I meant to say to add them as mults
instead
of just working them for awards purposes, playing cards, etc.

I'm enjoying the feedback so far. Let's hear some more!

Some weeks ago "Prairie Home Companion" had an "interview" with, among
others, "Senator Dole," in which the Underwear Question was asked.

"Boxers or briefs?" the questioner asked. "Depends," said Senator Dole.

If you don't get it, you don't know any very-senior citizens.

Sorry, Trey.

Good idea. It's only fair, right? Maybe that way I could work them more often!!!

It was real hard getting the attention of W1AW/3 from close-in WNY. Only
worked them once through the pile of stations calling them. It was easier
working those 1x1 guys with 100w/tribander&wires out in SF!!

Speaking of WRTC, it was great to participate, in some small way, by being
pileup fodder for the contest. It was a great contest and the organizers
deserve a ton of credit for the job they did, not only in putting on the
event, but for keeping us all informed with what was happening and making it
very easy to be interested in from home. Congratulations, of course to the
winners, but I think every one of the operators on each team was a winner.
Every one of them earned their spot in the WRTC and they all did great. It
was a real pleasure working the cream of the crop from this side of things!

It's gonna be a tough act to follow, but I can't wait for the next WRTC.
Kinda wish it went the whole 24 hours of the IARU, but I understand the time
constraints with the awards the next day. The rest of the contest was sort
of well, routine!!!

I really got into the WRTC thing. I ran the contest with a low-tribander
(rooftop) and inverted Vee for 40m. Skipped 80-160. Ran barefoot, maybe
150w, but probably closer to the 100w. No packet. Did keep the rig
interfaced to the logging program, I'm not fond of finding I forgot to
change the band on the computer after an hour went by!!! It was neat knowing
those guys out west were all running under similar constraints and did so
well. Now I know the trick to working 1K-2K QSOs while running an average
station: promotion and bribery!!! How about the "Special Work AE2T in
Sweepstakes Keychain Award"??? Naw, I don't think even that would get ME up
there!!!

Anyway, it was a great event and great to see everyone get behind it and be
a success. Now, if we could just make it an Olympic event???!!!

I am trying to get a 10M yagi (DX Engineering) to work. I am using their
dimensions and verified them in YO and AO. The thing looks fine.

The only thing I was lacking from the original antenna was the beta match.
I figured I could guess size based on my 15M yagi. "A little smaller."

Anyway... I put the thing together and put the MFJ analyzer on it with it at
about 10' above the ground and pointing up at 45 degrees. The low SWR point
was 2:1 in about the right place. No amount of tweeking seemed to improve
this SWR reading.

When I was playing with the beta rod length, I noticed that the MFJ SWR
analyzer went to 1.1:1 when I removed the rod. Huh? I took out the coax
jumper and tested it again with a 2' piece of coax. Same reading. I also
tried a different balun (I'm using the W2DU current baluns BTW). Same result.

So... I figure what the heck... I'll put it up. I connect it to my feedline
which is CATV hardline with ansyc xfrmers on each end. I hook up the MFJ at
the shack end and it has a VERY high SWR. Hey what's up?

H E L P !!! Should I go back to my 2:1 SWR with the beta rod and hook it up
to the CATV and see what happens? Why can't I use the MFJ analyzer hooked
right to the antenna and get good results?

Subject: How Much does a DB Cost?
Message-ID: <199607221016.DAA06405@dfw-ix2.ix.netcom.com>

Back when I was a pup, I was very much impressed by W3AFM's QST series on
station design. One aspect that struck me as particularly interesting was
his use of the marginal cost of a dB as a means of deciding where to invest
next in his station.

Rereading the series 30+ years later, some of the specific numbers he came
up with seem questionable, but the basic concept is certainly sensible, and
maybe worth an updated article on the subject. Rather than put my ideas
down and then (if I got up the courage) circulate them to the reflector, I
thought I would invite you all to give me your thoughts first (direct e-mail
please, for the sake of reflector bandwidth). Any finished article will
give credit to contributors, while (as usual) reserving any blame for
mistakes to the author. At a minimum, I promise to summarize and make the
summary available.

Here are some of the questions that occur to me. Feel free to answer these,
and to add your own pet issues. I am well aware that there are many, many
variables, and that there will be no single answer -- but at least I hope to
suggest a way of thinking about the subject that each reader can apply to
his/her particular situation, interests, etc. Questions:

1. How does the value of a dB of station performance vary between
contesting and DXing? It has been said that for contesters a dB means an
entire layer of stations previously unworkable now becomes workable. Is
that true? Is there a corresponding figure of merit for DXing? How can it
be measured?

2. How should a station designer "weight" changes that affect both
receiving and transmitting performance (e.g. tower height, antenna gain)
compared with those that only affect one or the other? For example, some
receiving improvements are really cheap (per dB), but may run into overall
system limitations (atmospheric noise,etc.).

3. How should I treat the question of balancing transmitting and receiving
performance? How do you tell if you're an alligator, or the opposite?

3. What are appropriate rules of thumb for calculating the marginal cost of
a dB of amplifier? Tower? Antenna gain?

4. How should I deal with station changes that don't affect the strength of
signals (either transmitted or received), but that arguably improve the
station's ability to achieve its goals (e.g. packet for DXing, computer
contest logging software with new capabilities such as band-mapping or super
check partial)?

The 40-2CD is known to 'almost' have a resonance on 17 meters, where the
loading coils are almost chokes. This may spoil the log's performance/SWR
on that band. Best bet would be to model the whole mess. There's a pretty good
model for the 40-2CD floating around (available from me on request); and
you could generate a model for the log from the manual...

I was immediatet past President of the Southeastern DX Club (SEDXC) when the
olympics were awarded to Atlanta. I was asked to lead an effort to see if
WRTC could be tied into 1996 Olympic games. I wrote several involved with
the previous WRTC...but no one ever answered (not you Danny)! Then several
of us decided that we would do it on our own. The first answer we got back
was to write a short scenerio of about the competition and what would be
required from IOC and ACOG. At first there was some interest especially
since there would be teams from all around the world ready to compete. We
got the SEDXC to approve sponsorship and knew we could get ARRL approval,
too. Then came the commercials!

Fellow SEDXCer Neil KC4MJ was trying to arrange amateur communications and a
an official olympic station. At almost the same time he was informed that
the olympics needed no amateur
communications and I was told that the olympic games needed no amateur
events. We could not use or make any connection to the olympic games!
So as of 4 years ago all plans were dropped. Without any olympic tie in
all interest also stopped!

Neil and then fellow SEDXCer N4UCK kept plugging on the use of amateur radio
volunteers. They made small breakthoughs that at first allowed amateur
volunteers with handhelds, then finally after a flap over several of the rec
news groups any amateur visiting could bring their handheld under certain
conditions! Still no official olympic ststion however. By the 1996
Atlanta Hamfestival in June ACOG was begging for volunteers (even having a
table at the hamfest).

Jim, N4UCK kept plugging and with ARRL help got FCC to allow Georgia
stations to use the special call signs such as K96JRB, KM900P, or KC25MJ.
Just two weeks ago Jim got the FCC to assign him W4O as the official olympic
call.

If people like Jim and Neil had not hammered for YEARS on ACOG this would be
the first olympics in 60 years without any amateur radio representation.
Maybe the next city will have a more receptive group. If Motorola and any
Bell system is involved they will fight to keep you out!

I think the Goodwill games (Turner Broadcasting) would be an easier target
(if they are staged again).

I wanted to forward Jon's note to the group. I believe this is the
problem I am having also. My MFJ analyzer has worked great on every
antenna up to this one. I dont believe the hardline or coax is bad, but
will check it first thing next weekend.

Anyone else seen a problem with the MFJ on 10M antennas? I noted
problems with the AEA unit on my 15m antennas. It would not give valid
results as compared with the MFJ and two SWR bridges in the shack.

I will follow up next week.

Bill,
I had a similar experience with a 10m Cushcraft monobander this
past week that a friend put up. Screwy results with about the
same set up you had. I went over there to see if we could find
the problem and it just WOULD NOT respond to the MFJ
analyzer!
We reset everything to factory dimensions very carefully and hauled
it up. The Bird showed FLAT darn near across the whole band and
the MFJ still showed minimum SWR at best to be nearly 3:1
Go figgure!?
I have used the MFJ instrument on several different antennas with
respectable results...Dunno
If you find a solution, pse share it!

Looked at the web site for the Olympics and chess was not listed as an
event on the schedule. Perhaps that sport was featured in some other
worldwide competition. Chess would have been a great entry path for
radiosporting.

It doesnt diminish the dream, only the pathway to it is muddier.

I think the direct cost of a dB is related to how many dB you ALREADY OWN !

Hmm..well said

Could it be that the cost of db's increase logrythmically...how appropriate!

Can anyone shed any light on the whereabouts of Warren, the ARRL
Asst Contest Manager? I've been e-corresponding with him on
non-contest topics for a long time, had some e-mail from him while
I was out of the country in June, and when I replied, I'm told he
no longer works there and the contest manager can't tell me how to
find him. I've asked a couple of other people at the League who
ought to know, they profess ignorance.

Probably best to e-mail me direct and not make this into a general
reflector issue - sudden disappearances from the League offices tend
to have several sides to the issue. If anyone else is interested in
Warren's whereabouts, e-mail me and I'll let you know what I find out.

I placed all the HP and LP together so no one would get mislead into
thinking they have won something they did not. The scores are still marked
HP and LP so you can tell how you did against your own power.

If you send me a score with only single op on it and no phone, cw, or
mixed on it, I will put you in the mixed section. Send me a correction
and I will move you.

I assumed from reading the Rules that there is no High and Low Power
Classes. Most people are sending in whether they used HP or LP. Since
they are taking the time to do this I will break them down for them.

Where you see a number between the zones and Hq columns means that the
person added them together.

Subject: Super morse for 486?
Message-ID: <c=US%a=_%p=INTERGRAPH%l=HQ1-960722202855Z-597@hq14.pcmail.ingr.com>

Greetings,

I'm considering upgrading my CW contest skills. I have a copy of Super
Morse which runs fine on a 286, but my travel 486 laptop is too much
horsepower for the application. Is there a recommended Super Morse-like CW
tutor available via FTP that runs on a 486 platform? If so, where would the
FTP site(s) be.

Thanks for the help.

        Roger ...
