Hi Lars,

In a message dated 96-09-19 11:37:44 EDT, you write:

> Even if you have impedance-transformation you will still have
>THE SAME
>radiationresistans so that the groundloss/rad.res. ratio will remain
>unchanged!

I'm happy to see someone de-bunk this misconception.

It appears in too many articles and handbooks here in the USA. There was even
an antenna that claimed a folded element increased radiation resistance and
reduced the need for radials, they gave Los Alamos National Lab as a
reference.

Los Alamos "suggested" they remove the reference, and they did.

Thank you for de-bunking this dark magic.

Here is an interesting statistic. When K2MM, WN4KKN and WB5VZL
visited about a month ago, John and George stayed up late
one night coming up with the available four letter callsigns
with the number as the second character (K#, N# and W#).

Here is the breakdown by call area:

0 987
1 1129
2 766
3 1032
4 578
5 830
6 546
7 1009
8 1126
9 1081

The total is 9084. Guess the Fours and Sixes get the fewest
choices. I think the FCC made a few more calls "available" after
this was done, but I don't have any data on the 2 year waiting
status.

I was amused to note that the CQ Mag contest calendar this month has the
wrong dates for CQWW - not in the short run-down at the front of K1AR's
column but at the back. Tuesday and Wednesday, indeed. My XYL might like
it better, but I doubt my boss would agree.

Several months ago there was a discussion on balloons/antennas. Someone was
building
an archive of articles and I thought it was on the KA9FOX page, but there is
only one article
there. Anyone know where the archive is?

An excellant way to remove a ground loop without destroying the RF shielding
properties of a shielded cable is to connect one end of the shield to ground
through a capacitor. Something like a 0.1 or 0.01 uF will keep the shield
impedance low for RF, yet appear as an open circuit to 60 Hz.

One other thought on DVP hum. I have an old Nel-Tech DVK 100 and the
so-called hum is actually the receiver picking up the micro processor. Gary
at Nel-Tech spend quite a bit of time on this. Someone borrowed my DVK
about 8 or 9 years ago for running the SS
from N4RJ (forget if it was Bill KM9P or Trey WN4KKN) and said they heard
the hum on the
Kenwood TS930 or 940. I sent it back and Gary worked on it, but said
except for processor hum
he found no Rf feedback or hum. I tried it with a TS940 and it sounded OK.
The real key I think is making up good connector leads!

In my case the Yaesu picks up the so-called hum where my ICOM does not. I
have the MFJ I use with my Yaesu now and I hear no hum from it al all.

Dave K4JRB

BTW: I have an ACER 385/20 notebook that puts processor hum on 10 and 24
Mhz when its laying on the operating table. Sounds just like the DVK.
