160 M DX window

Bruce---

Three cheers...

yours is probably the best reasoned response to this whole issue
that i've seen. First of all I'm not on 160 and secondly, I run 100
W to two dipoles so I don't qualify as even a pop gun much less a
big gun... BUT the essence of our hobby/sport is skill coupled with
whatever equipment is available and the conditions that the
ionosphere gods deal out.

Sure it's annoying sometimes to know that I have to compete in the
pileups with the like of K7QQ and others, but I'd rather depend on
my skills to achieve what I have and not have anymore "rules" than
necessary. Besides, the last thing I want to do is provide more
tools for the frequency cops.

Let's just get back to knowing how to operate and not look for
someone else to make rules to make our life easier.

I forward this to the reflector without the identity of the sender. As you
can see, not everyone on the contest reflector is a contestor. Big
supprise! hi

I feel no controversy is ever resloved without dialoge. I don't consider
the on-going discussion on this topic "trouble", but rather a healthy
discussion that will likley result in some positive changes to benefit BOTH
contesers AND non-contesters on topband.

This fellow IS entitled to his opinion (and anonimity). I happen to feel he
has made a few valid points.

Even if his email was a rather pointed shot at me personally, and all
contesters in general, I don't take offense. There is room for a lot of
competing and at times mutually exclusive activities in this hobby.
Sometimes the competing interest collide.

Remember, this is only a hobby. Enjoy it!

Subject: ARRL 160 Window

The DX Window in the ARRL 160 Meter Contest

Last year, a smaller DX window was created with the spirit and intent
of encouraging a sanctuary for non-North American stations to transmit
and be heard by more W/VE stations without being QRMed by W/VE stations
calling CQ. This "window" is ONLY for the ARRL 160 Meter Contest and
has no relevance for other contests or non-contest operations. It was
very successful and many midwest and far west stations made contacts with
Europe that would not have been otherwise possible. Activity between
W/VE stations ranged from 1800 to 1870 kHz and the "window" was fairly
clear. Most of the post-contest comments were positive about the new
smaller window. There is plenty of room to call CQ outside the "window".
Those of you with big signals on 160 can help the little guys make some
DX contacts by keeping the "window" clear.

     Bottom line:
     1) W/VE stations should not call CQ between 1830 and 1835 kHz.
     2) W/VE stations may answer CQ's from stations on other continents
         within the window.
     3) DX stations should consider listening outside the window to
keep down QRM and be heard by more W/VE stations.
     4) DX stations within North America should consider operating
outside the window. (Subject to controversy as it is not
         intercontinental.)

My appeal is to conscientiously try to observe the DX window. Five
kHz is only a small portion of the band. The ARRL 160 Meter Contest is
essentially a topband SS. The DX that can be worked is "extra credit"
so to speak. This will add to the fun of the entire event for everyone.

P.S. If there is anyone out there who can write contest rules cogently
and unambiguously without any loop holes, please contact the CAC!
