There is a type of LCD which has a diffuse translucent coating on the
back side which in turn is lit from the rear by an electro-luminescent
panel. This is the most incredibly readable panel I have ever seen.

readability is the same - perfect. It's being used in aircraft
displays and it a bit expensive, but surely a commercial version could
