Traditionally, Collins mechanical filters had better shape charactaristics
than crystal filters. Put an R4C and 75A-4 side by side and you can hear the
difference. The transducers in the mechancial filters also gave CW signals a
unique "depth" to them. If this sounds like subjective mumbo-jumbo, it is.
Crystal filter design has improved and Rockwell is manufacturing Collins
filters, so it's going to take a lab to compare them for actual shape and loss
and declare a winner.
